Student Data & Privacy Commitment
Our commitment to student dignity, agency, and trust
Blue is built on a simple principle:
Students should develop self-awareness and readiness without surveillance, over-collection of data, or loss of agency.
We design our platform to align with federal student privacy laws (including FERPA) and state-level student data protection requirements across the United States.
What Blue Is — and Is Not
Blue is an educational platform that helps students reflect, identify strengths, develop core values, and prepare for life after graduation.
Blue is not a monitoring or surveillance tool.
Our Core Privacy Guardrails
Blue is intentionally designed with strict boundaries:
- We do not track keystrokes
- We do not track student location
- We do not monitor activity outside the Blue platform
- We do not activate cameras
Microphone Use
Blue includes an optional microphone feature that allows students to record personal reflections or stories.
- The microphone is only activated through intentional student action within the app
- School districts may disable this feature
- Audio is not monitored or accessed unless a student chooses to share it
Who Can See What
Blue separates personal student content from institutional reporting.
Students
- See and control all of their own content
- Decide what, if anything, is shared
Parents / Guardians
- See summary-level information for their own student
- May view detailed content only if the student explicitly grants access
- Students can enable or disable parent access at any time
Educators / Counselors
- See summary-level data for students associated with them
- May view specific content only when a student grants access on a per-item basis
School & District Administrators
- See program-level and student-level summary data
- Do not see personal reflections or journaling unless explicitly shared
Student Content & Educational Records
Blue distinguishes between:
Student Personal Content
Reflections, stories, values work, and personal insights created by the student.
Institutional Reporting Data
Progress indicators, completion status, and summary metrics used by schools for oversight.
Schools receive visibility into progress — not private stories.
- We do not sell student data.
- We do not use student data for advertising.
- We do not monetize student content.
Blue uses a limited number of trusted service providers to operate the platform, including cloud infrastructure, transactional email delivery, and application notifications. These providers are contractually or operationally bound to support the platform's core functions and are not used for advertising, data brokerage, or unrelated commercial purposes.
Additional information is available on our Subprocessors & Infrastructure page.
Graduation & Account Transition
When a student graduates or leaves a participating school:
- School access to the student account ends
- Institutional reporting data does not persist beyond the school relationship
- Students retain access to their personal content
- Continued access beyond the transition period requires explicit student opt-in
There is no automatic conversion to paid accounts.
Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Blue uses AI in limited, transparent ways to support students. Examples include:
- Helping students summarize their own stories into strengths and motivators
- Generating student-facing summaries based on completed activities
Important clarifications:
- Student data is not used to train AI models
- AI outputs are advisory and student-facing
- AI does not make evaluative or disciplinary decisions
Data Security & Hosting
Blue is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) in U.S.-based data centers. Security protections include:
- Encryption of all student data at rest and in transit
- Encrypted databases, storage, logs, and backups
- Role-based access controls
- Secure key management
We implement administrative, technical, and physical safeguards designed to protect student information in alignment with federal and state education privacy requirements.
Our Commitment
We believe:
- Students should control their personal growth artifacts
- Schools should receive necessary oversight signals — not private narratives
- Privacy should be built into the product, not added later
Blue is designed to support educational growth while protecting student dignity, agency, and trust.
